"A Medallion for the Municipality of Gortynia"
The logo of the Municipality of Gortynia, Arcadia
The Municipality of Gortynia logo drew its inspiration from the forms of Ancient Greek coinage. Greek coins often carried on the obverse designs representative of the polis that issued them. The reverse was also struck with an image and an inscription attesting to the coin’s place of origin.
The logo –medallion for the Municipality of Gortynia is decorated with pictorial allusions to the historical, cultural and geographical features of the region. The initials of the name Gortynia are inscribed in the center of the composition. The rocky ridges of the area rise up taking the form of Nea Moni Philosophou (a monastery) one of Gortynia’s more symbolic monuments, which appears on the upper part of the logo, while the curving like line symbolizing the Loussios River is depicted on the lower part. The designated colors on the logo are English red and umber since they are so characteristic of the Gortnynian landscape, where rocks and red soil are predominant.
