I. CREATION OF A MOVEMENT NETWORK GUIDING TOWARDS THE SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING COMPLEX
The aim is to create an organized network that will guide the visitor from the gate - passage to the city park and then to the functions of the building complex. The flow of movements towards the interior of the complex appear as transverse forces that guide the movement from the front of the plot to its core. The network of passages:
- Defines the main paths of movement, guide the visitor toward functions located in the innermost core facilities,
- Indicates the paths that the visitor can follow,
- Organizes the space (defines the sets of functions).
In order to create these flows, and the atriums between the functions, specific parts of the previous building complex are eliminated.
II. POINT INTERVENTIONS WITH UNIFICATION
The goal is the creation of point necessary interventions - additions to make the complex effective. The Gate - Passage that introduces the visitor to the area functions as a unifying element.
III. RESTRUCTURING OF THE EXISTING CONDITION. The Philosophy of the intervention concerns the utilization as much as possible of every trace of the previous building complex, with the minimal point intervention (addition of volumes - undoing of existing ones), for the benefit of preserving the memory, the quality of the architectural space, the functionality and the economic viability.
a. Restoration - Preservation
Every trace of architecture - historical aspects is utilized in the synthesis and is still "engraved" in the new building complex. We refer to the restoration, preservation and promotion of the architectural value of each aspect of the complex.
b. Additions. The addition of a new level which is placed at a distance from the existing building shell highlights the value of the existing industrial shell. Τhe existing stone structure that exists in the southern part of the plot is restored. The new structure that consists of beams and columns - metal elements - and slabs of concrete, will serve as the main structural system.
c. The crucial reductions of specific building volumes are made in order to allow the creation of movement flows, atriums, as well as to permit each building volume to efficiently manage conditions of ventilation, natural lighting and easy access.
IV. ALTERNATION OF ATRIUMS - SEMI-OUTDOOR - CLOSED SPACES. Atriums are created both through the demolition of specific existing buildings and from the scratch into the new construction along its entire length -
