Guided by the concept of the unification of the wider area and the creation of an open dynamic urban space, a city passage and an open spatial scene is proposed. This synthetic gesture highlights the visual connection to the wider area’s historical traces and landmarks (the city’s old aqueduct, the fortress, the city’s skyline, the sea front). The intervention’s suggested typology unifies the city into a whole. The proposed synthesis works as a binding link between the Port and the Municipal Market (transverse axis), between Kapnergati Square and the area of Ag. Nikolaou (horizontal axis). That way one of the most important common places is created, a dynamic city square that can be transformed according to the spatial needs of the community.
The following parameters contribute towards that direction: - The proposed traffic regulations that evidently highlight the visual connection and most of all the functional connection of the whole - accessibility for all, - The open free public space that is introduced and the narrow passages - pedestrian streets that channel pedestrians from the old Town and Kapnergati Square to the central Square and vice versa, - The wooden wings - structures around the square that signify the rest area (including built-in benches, tree planting, commercial uses, kiosks-press center), - The tree planting of the pedestrian passages (narrow roads leading to the square), - The local material of the square (Kavala’s Marble).
